Place Name

The original name of the municipality was "KaanPeech" (Mayan: Kaan=snake, Peech=tick) which translates as a place of snakes and ticks.

When the spanish arrived Castilianized the pronunciation "Campeche", and named the place the mane of Lazaro, for coming on Sunday of Lazaros.

In 1540 changed its name to Villa de San Francisco de Campeche.

Geography

San Francisco de Campeche is located 387km northeast of Merida and 1127km southwest of Mexico City.

Climate

The climate is warming, humid and rainy in summer ranging in early fall (June to October) the average annual temperature is 27c.

Population

With a population of 220,389 inhabitants, according to the Census of Population and Housing 2010, is the most populated city in the state.

Attire

The dress is composed of three parts, the top have their origin in the huipil mestizo, with the difference that is embroidered in black and with motifs inspired by the onion and squash blossoms.

Gastronomy

Between the dishes is the seafood cocktail, pickled fish and bread with dogfish, as well as snacks in the region drained panuchos and tamales among others.
