Location: It is located 137 km from the city of Campeche, in the municipality of Holpelchen. About 79 km from the highway at the junction 261 to a path a 32 km paved road that leads directly to the site.

Site Importance: Considered most important Prehispanic city of Chenes region. It is know as "regional capital" in the Maya area and is considered the most important Prehispanic city of Chenes area, bedsides being the largest in the region.






Xtampak means in Maya "old walls".

The earliest evidence of human occupation at the site date from the Late Preclassic (300-250 BC). Between 600 and 800, Santa Rosa Xtampak was a major political entity in the region of Chenes.


Series of interconnected courtyards and plaza and relatively isolated groups.

A wide roadway, with an altar near its eastern end, linking the place square pyramidal base northeast group.

Xtampak Santa Rosa is one of the few places in your region that has carved sculpted and smooth.







The palace is a three story building with 27 rooms on the first floor, 12 in the second and 5 in the third, making a total of 44.

It has four external stairways, teo of which located on the west of the structure and lead to second level.

The other two are impracticable, and go from second to third level. In addition, this building has two staircases that connect the three levels.

The eastern side of the building seems to have three pyramidal temples with a three storey building.










The serpent's mouth building, whose facade is typically Chenes, with decorative elements of Puuc architecture, such as sets of three drums located on the upper lateral chambers.


The main facade is a zoomorphic comprehensive cover, which represents the earth monster crouching on bent legs that can be seen on the sides of the ears, and as the mouth wide open, which provides access to the building.









The Red House and its annex, forming a narrow alley of 14 meters, long by just under 1 meter wide. 

Together, these buildings of three rooms each, from an L.

The barracks is a space of about 2,300 meters bounded by buildings on all four sides.

Structures north, south and west had one single row of rooms and wide staircases at both ends of each building.









The structure of the East had two parallel rows of chambers.

The quadrangle of being this has three main buildings (the south, west and east) linked at their corners, wile the north leaves an open space at its eastern end, which one served as a gateway to this architectural.

Another entrance is located at the center of the building west, and is a sort of vaulted porch.










The buildings north, east and south had central stairway which allowed access to the top of the buildings from the inside of the quadrangle. 

The structure has multiple entrances formed by masonry columns coated with finely carved ashlars.

Near the center of the quadrangle there is a small platform in a square shape which was possibly an altar.
